The short answer
A heat pump is a strong fit for most Morgan Hill homes because one system covers hot South Valley summers and mild winters. Bay Area rules won't force you to replace a working furnace. Gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must be zero-NOx, though, so a heat pump is worth considering whenever your furnace is due for replacement.
Morgan Hill sits at the southern end of the Santa Clara Valley, about 10 miles southeast of our San Jose base, and summers here run hotter than they do in towns closer to the Bay. A heat pump handles both that summer cooling and the mild, damp winter heating with a single system. ArcticPoint HVAC Repair sizes, installs, and sets up heat pumps for Morgan Hill homes. That includes replacing an aging furnace and air conditioner as well as adding comfort to rooms that never feel quite right.
Why a Heat Pump Makes Sense in Morgan Hill
The Santa Clara Valley has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and mild, damp winters. In the southern part of the valley, summer afternoons get noticeably warmer than in areas near the Bay, so cooling capacity matters as much as heating. A heat pump moves heat out of your home in summer and brings heat in during winter. One outdoor unit can replace both a central air conditioner and a gas furnace.
Morgan Hill winters rarely stay cold for long, so a properly sized heat pump can carry the full heating load for most homes. Before we recommend equipment, we still look at your home's layout, insulation, and sun exposure. A west-facing living room or a warm upstairs bonus room can change what the system needs to do.
How Bay Area Air Rules Affect Your Furnace Decision
Under Bay Area Air District Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 on must meet a zero-NOx emission standard. In practice, that points homeowners toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date.
The rule does not require you to remove working equipment. It applies only when an existing furnace fails or is replaced. If your furnace runs fine, you can plan on your own timeline. If it's aging or needs a major repair, it may make sense to look at a heat pump now instead of installing a new gas furnace you'd likely move away from later.
You may also be considering a heat pump water heater. The zero-NOx date for small water heaters under Rule 9-6 was set for 2027, but the Air District Board is considering amendments in November 2026 that could delay it. Check the current rule before planning that replacement, and we're happy to talk it through with you.
What a Morgan Hill Heat Pump Installation Involves
Every house is different, but most installs follow the same basic steps:
- A load calculation based on your home's size, insulation, windows, and sun exposure, so the system isn't oversized or undersized
- An inspection of existing ductwork for leaks, poor sizing, or damaged sections that would reduce efficiency
- A check of your electrical panel to confirm it can support the new equipment, or a plan if it can't
- Choosing between a ducted system, ductless mini-splits, or a combination, based on your layout
- Removing old equipment, setting the outdoor unit on a level pad, and connecting refrigerant lines, wiring, and the thermostat
- Testing airflow and refrigerant charge, then walking you through thermostat settings and filter changes
Ducted or Ductless: Choosing the Right Setup
Many Morgan Hill homes already have ducts from a furnace and central air system. If those ducts are in good shape, a ducted heat pump can often reuse them, which keeps the project simpler. Homes without ducts, garage conversions, and additions are often better served by ductless mini-splits. These mount on the wall and let you control each room separately.
We'll explain the tradeoffs for your specific house so you can choose what fits how you actually use your space.
Rebates and Tax Credits: What's Current
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) covered qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025. It is not available for new installations after that date, so don't count on it when budgeting a new system.
Local help may still be available. Bay Area homeowners can check BayREN and their local clean energy provider for current heat pump and electrification incentives. Amounts and availability change with each funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before including it in any quote.
